I've known what deepfakes are for years and yeah I fell for one of those tom cruise vids. It was exactly as you said, a copy of the tiktok autoplayed as I was scrolling somewhere else. I half watched it, thought "huh tom cruise is a cooky celeb" and moved on with my day. I thought it was odd tom cruise was on my side of the internet but i just assumed he was trying to get a tiktok following like other mainstream celebs are. Yeah i thought his face looked a little unnatural, but I figured it was due to him just being a weird guy and holding himself strangely. I didn't know it was a deepfake until this video. You can know full well this technology exists and it can still slip right past you without you knowing.

The deepfake voice technology seems like it could be really beneficial for people who are mute or have some sort of voice/speech disorder to be able to have a voice that is more unique to them. Idk what the regular deepfakes could be used for in a positive way

CGI is not a new technology, its just becoming more publicly available. I guess because the skills are improving to make it less animated and more real, some could mistake it for the real person. Its the same as questioning if photographs have been edited. There are all kinds of fake videos on YT, dragons and aliens, people doing magic and most don't believe them to be real. Its not like we always believe everything someone says just because they are a real person.

I think people worry much more about this sort of thing than they reallg need to. Sure, there are the rare instances of deepfakes that are truly convincing, but the overwhelming majority of the time, it isn't really hard to spot this sort of thing. More importantly... Humans are really quite good at adapting to emergent technologies. As the commenter who was highlighted in this video said, photoshop was once heralded as a huge, problem, scary and nefarious, as well. Yet, somehow, society hasn't collapsed. As this technology evolves, I'm sure that methods of analysis and laws/restrictions around it will continue to pop up right alongside the software.
